 This week's tip: Fish or Cut Bait: Are You Doing All You Can to Succeed?
Succeeding in the gift basket business takes more than just wishing or dreaming. You must go after the business around you if you plan to succeed.
Many would-be gift basket retailers call me asking for help, but when I ask what techniques they've tried, they are stumped. Many haven't even gone after the potential business in their own communities. If you haven't even fished in your own pond, you might as well cut bait and try another endeavor.
Because I get newsletters and news releases from all over the country, I decided to take a look at one of them to see what potential gift basket business I would explore if I lived in that town. I chose an announcement from Clarion, PA, a town of about 41,000. Their Clarion News for August 22nd lists about 41 different events.
While there is no guarantee that any of my inquiries would lead to sales, I would certainly explore a few:
- The Men's Golf Scramble will have a putting contest. I'll contact them to see what the prize will be?
- There is an ART IN THE FOREST FREE COUNTRYSIDE TOUR: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. , (also noon-5 p.m., Aug. 27), Tionesta. Participants will enjoy a drive-it-yourself tour of 9 stops of arts/crafts attractions along an 18 mile route. Brochures available at visitors center in Tionesta or by email at bdw3952@hotmail.com. I will offer a giveaway gift basket a the Visitors Center and use the names of the entrants to make a database.
- I would join the Clarion Chamber of Commerce to get acquainted with the other business owners in town.
What opportunities await you in your community? Are you an active member of your chamber or business networking group? Do you read the local papers and newsletters to stay on top of what's going on? Have you offered your gift basket services to the business people you patronize regularly, such as your beautician, dentist, spa owner?
